Venados Run Club Review

Stop #11: Venados Run Club

Venados Run Club

Chicago has no shortage of run clubs, but every so often we stumble onto one that stops us in our tracks (sometimes literally, because we’re too busy chatting to keep pace). This time, it’s Venados Run Club, and honestly, we should have visited sooner.

The Basics

Venados was founded in 1981, which makes them the 2nd oldest running club in the city. Let that sink in, they were logging miles before most of us were even a twinkle in our parents’ eyes. They’re a Latina-based running club with deep roots in Pilsen, where they’ve held down weekly community runs for decades. That kind of staying power doesn’t happen by accident, it happens because a club actually means something to the people who show up.

And they’re not resting on four decades of history. Venados recently started a kids club, which might be our favorite kind of growth: the kind that plants seeds for the next generation of runners.

The Vibe

We happened to catch Venados on Mexican Independence Day, and the energy was electric. But talking to the group, we got the strong sense this wasn’t a one-off, the vibes here are always festive. This is a club that shows up with pride, and it shows.

Their mission is simple and powerful: take up space in running and represent their community with pride. You feel that the second you roll up. This is a group with strong community ties, and it shows in everything from the size of the crowd to the way people talk to each other mid-run.

The Run

  • Distance: 3 or 5 miles
  • Pace: Wildly, refreshingly inclusive — whatever speed you’ve got, you belong here
  • Crowd size: 50+ regulars on a normal week, and about 150 the night we visited
  • Meetup structure: They meet at the halfway point, a fun logistical quirk that keeps things social from start to finish

The People

This is the part we always care about most, and Venados delivered. Multiple people introduced themselves, asked if it was our first time, and told us to come back. The conversation didn’t stop for the entire route. Good pace, good company, good stories, that’s the Venados formula, apparently, and it’s been working since 1981.

The Verdict

Venados Run Club is proof that a run club can be both an institution and a party. Decades of history, a mission rooted in pride and representation, and a crowd that welcomes strangers like old friends — this is Chicago running culture at its best.

If you’re in Pilsen and looking for your people, lace up and go meet the Venados. Just be ready to make some new friends along the way.
