50K Chicago

Fancy Nonsense 25K/50K Chicago

50K Chicago

Start: 8 am
When: Sunday October 29th, 2022
Where: Red Gate Woods

Fancy Nonsense is a 25K/50K Chicago.

A Nonsensical Running Experience

My mind is always looking for a good trick to pull or some shenanigans to get into. I've been voted the prankster of the office. My imagination runs wild on most of my runs. When I'm in the woods, I pretend I'm a hobbit running through the woods on an especially important quest.

It's this combination of mischief and imagination that the Fancy Nonsense 25K/50K Chicago was born.

The course is designed to allow the runner a space to return to the joy of running.  Yes, you will accomplish your goal distance. More importantly, you will smile, you will laugh, you may even be a little confused. You will test your mental and physical limits while I tickle your funny bone.

The race starts and finishes at the Red Gate Woods in the Palos Trail System just 20 minutes from downtown Chicago.  The course will wind you on mostly single track through the woods, over the buried remains of Chicago Pile-1, the world's first nuclear reactor. If you're running the 25k you'll get about 1400 feet of elevation gain, the 50k will get about 2800 feet of gain.

Aid stations will be stocked with your typical ultra fare, plus pastries from my favorite bakery in Chicago, Roeser's, will be featured as well.

Cut off time for both races is 5pm

Below are some updates to help you prepare for race day.

Packet Pick-Up
7:00am-7:45am for the 50k runners
& 8:05am-8:45am for the 25k runners
at Red Gate Wood

Day Of
8:00am start for the 50k runners
9:00am start for the 25k runners

There will be a short pre-race briefing to review course markings. Major intersections will be marked. However, each runner will be given a fully marked course map at packet pickup. There are lots of random, unmarked trails. You won't be running any of them, so don't turn down them.

There will be other people out on the course that day, be friendly and kind!

Course
The course is a single out and back if you're running the 25k and a double out and back if you're running the 50k. It's a mix of single track, wide dirt paths with a bit of random pavement thrown in. It can get muddy. However its mostly runnable.

Aid Stations
Two aid stations for the 25k runners at mile 5.75 and 9.75.
Five aid stations for the 50k runners at mile 5.75, 9.75, 15.55, 21.3, & 25.3

Aid stations will be stocked with water, soda, snacks, doughnuts, and more. Please let me know if you have food allergies or specific requests!

Crews
Crews can touch base with their runner at Wolf Road Woods and at Red Gate Woods.

No pacers allowed.

Nonsense
There will be four riddles located at the aid stations.  If you can provide the answer to all four riddles by the end of your race, you will get a prize. Do not use your phone, seriously.

Rules
Be understanding and kind to EVERYONE: other runners, volunteers, other trail users, and race staff.

Map
Final Course Map will be sent out the week of the race.
