Look, we need to talk about New Year’s resolutions. They’re garbage.
There, we said it.
Every January, runners everywhere make the same tired promises: “This is the year I finally run that marathon.” “I’m going to PR my 5K.” “I’m running 1,000 miles this year or bust.” And by February? Most of us are face-down in a bag of chips, wondering why we set ourselves up for failure again.
Here’s the thing: resolutions are built on the idea that you’re not good enough as you are. That you need to become someone different, someone “better.” But what if—and hear us out here—you’re already pretty damn great?
Welcome to Your Year of Authentic Running
Instead of resolutions, we’re proposing something radical: be the runner you actually are, not the runner you think you should be.
Love trail running but feel like you “should” be faster? Screw that. Enjoy the views. Stop and pet the dogs. Take photos of the mushrooms. Your run your pace, your joy.
Feel pressure to sign up for ultras because that’s what “real” trail runners do? Nope. If you’re happiest crushing 10Ks, then crush those 10Ks with your whole heart.
Think you need to wake up at 5 AM to be a “serious” runner? Unless you’re actually a morning person, stop torturing yourself. Night runs exist. Lunch runs exist. Whenever-the-hell-works-for-you runs exist.
What Authentic Running Looks Like
Authentic running means running the distances that make YOU happy, wearing whatever the hell you want (yes, even that ridiculous costume), and walking when you need to walk and running when you want to run. It means skipping runs when your body or brain needs rest, saying no to races that don’t light you up, and saying yes to adventures that do.
It means recognizing that the person who runs three slow, joyful miles is just as much a runner as the person grinding out hundred-milers. It means understanding that your worst run is still a run, and you showed up, and that matters.
Be the Runner You Want to Be (Not the One Instagram Tells You To Be)
Social media wants you to believe that “real” runners are always crushing PRs, running in perfect weather with perfect form, smiling effortlessly at mile 20, and somehow maintaining a spotless running outfit.
But real running? Real running is messy. It’s showing up on days when you don’t want to. It’s sometimes walking more than running. It’s weird tan lines, chafing in unfortunate places, and occasionally getting lost. It’s laughing with your running buddies about the time someone (no names) had an emergency bathroom situation three miles from the trailhead.
Your 2026 Challenge (If You Want It)
Instead of resolutions, here’s what we’re asking: Just be you. But be ALL of you.
Want to run a 100-miler? Do it because it excites you, not because it impresses people. Want to stick with 5Ks forever? Hell yes. Be the best 5K runner you can be. Want to take six months off to heal an injury properly? That’s not weakness, that’s wisdom. Want to slow down and actually enjoy running again? Please do. The miles will wait.
The Only Rule That Matters
At CUSS Running, we have one core belief: everyone runner belongs. Not everyone who meets certain speed requirements. Not everyone who runs certain distances. Not everyone who looks a certain way or has the right gear.
Everyone.
Including you. Exactly as you are. Right now.
So this year, we’re not asking you to become someone new. We’re asking you to be more fully yourself. Run your run. Live your life. Be authentic as hell.
And if anyone has a problem with that? Well, they probably shouldn’t hang out with us.
Let’s Make This Happen
Ready to embrace authentic running in 2026? We are too. Join us for races that celebrate every kind of runner. Sign up for coaching that meets you where you are. Connect with a community that actually gives a damn about you, not just your finish times.
Because the best version of you isn’t some future person who runs faster or farther. It’s the person reading this right now, deciding to show up as themselves.
See you on the trail.
